Our History & Our Future
The Agency was founded in 1917 by William Jewett Phillips, hence the name W.J. Phillips, Inc.
William saw value in managing risk and wanted to help others do the same. With the customer in mind, he decided to establish an independent agency. This allowed him to focus on serving the customer's risk management needs and not a company's profit goals.
He decided to only do business with financially sound insurance companies that, like him, operated with integrity and the customer in mind. He became the second appointed agent of Auto-Owners Insurance Company, making W.J. Phillips, Inc. the oldest family-owned Auto Owner's agency in the United States.
